ONC Health IT Certification Program Director Joins EHNAC as Ex Officio Commissioner



Captain Alicia A. Morton, DNP, RN-BC to Support EHNAC’s Mission of Ensuring the Highest Standards of Healthcare Data Privacy, Security and Integrity

FARMINGTON, Conn. – November 29, 2017 – The Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC), a non-profit standards development organization and accrediting body for organizations that electronically exchange healthcare data, today announced that Capt. Alicia A. Morton, DNP, RN-BC has been appointed an EHNAC commissioner ex officio through 2020. She is an active-duty registered nurse in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps, stationed at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) as the director of the Health IT Certification Program.

Capt. Morton joins an EHNAC Commission comprised of an executive director, an operations vice president and fifteen healthcare industry leaders including stakeholders and consumer representatives from private and public-sector organizations.

In addition, her insights as a doctorally prepared and board-certified informatics nurse will be invaluable to EHNAC’s mission of ensuring the highest standards of patient data privacy, security and integrity.”

Capt. Morton joined the ONC in 2005 to lead the contract for the first voluntary EHR certification program and has worked in a variety of roles within several ONC offices. Most recently, she served as the deputy chief medical officer alongside Dr. Jacob Reider and a senior advisor to the Office of Standards & Technology.

Prior to joining ONC, Capt. Morton was stationed at CMS where she managed the systems development component of the Doctor’s Office Quality-Information Technology (DOQ-IT) project. She was the lead technical project manager for the Consolidated Health Informatics (CHI) initiative and integral to the Vista Office EHR project. In addition to her technical expertise, Capt. Morton has more than nine years of full-time clinical nursing experience, during which she gained first-hand experience utilizing EHR systems. From 1999-2003, she was a senior clinical research nurse at the NIH Clinical Center on a bone marrow transplant/hematology & oncology unit. From 1994 to 1999 she served on active duty in the U.S. Navy stationed at the National Naval Medical Center Bethesda and aboard the USNS Comfort.

The Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission (EHNAC) is a voluntary, self-governing standards development organization (SDO) established to develop standard criteria and accredit organizations that electronically exchange healthcare data.
