What’s Next for E-Prescribing?

According to the 2011 National Progress Report on E-prescribing and Interoperable Health Care published by Surescripts®, e-prescribing adoption has grown by leaps and bounds to 58% of physician offices in 2011, up from only one in ten physician offices in 2008.1 With this surge of e-prescribing adoption and the recent publication of both the HIPAA Final Omnibus Rule and the Stage 2 meaningful use criteria, it is time to review the challenges of e-prescribing and discuss solutions. This article focuses on the regulatory issues surrounding data privacy and security as well as the technical standards related to networks and connectivity.
